The number of ATMs in Angola it is in decline, and currently there are only one for every 1.944 users, according to calculations by Expansão based on the Statistics of the Payment System of the National Bank of Angola (BNA).

This represents a 2% drop compared to 2021, i.e. 53 fewer ATMs available to users. Active ATM cards grew 12% to 6,2 million compared to the 5,6 million recorded in 2021. In 2021 there were more ATMs and fewer active cards, which represented a ratio of 1.715 for each ATM.

After all, at a time when the number of multicaixa card users is increasing, ATMs are decreasing, a scenario that is not at all favorable for bank customers who, at the beginning of each month, despair in long queues to withdraw money, in a country where the Most of the economy is informal, which means that most payments are made in cash.

The decrease in available ATMs is due to the closure of Banco Prestígio, but the closure of some branches of Banco Económico and Banco de Poupança e Crédito (BPC) also contributed to the reduction of ATMs.

Thus, in 2022, 233 million financial operations were carried out at ATMs, which corresponds to 5,1 billion Kz, of which around 66% (3,3 billion) were withdrawals. Non-financial operations (balance inquiries, IBAN, among others) had 180,4 million records.
