Satellite (merely illustrative)

Much has been said lately about the AngoSat 1, the satellite that is being made thanks to a collaboration between Russia and Angola.

The project went public in 2009, but started to be effectively produced in 2012. After a few months without further information, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Angola, Georges Chikoti confirmed the year of completion of the project: 2017.

The great peculiarity of this satellite is that it will be the first to be operated by an African country. But for this to happen, Angola you will need to create structures in Angola over the remaining 3 years. When it comes to infrastructure, the Mission Control Center and the central station of the satellite communication network are specifically indicated, which should be built in Luanda.

AngoSat technical details

Such a project could be applied in several branches. Military, scientific, navigation and communications.

It was the last option chosen, AngoSat will be a communications satellite, to further boost the telecommunications market in Angola, which is already quite productive.

For this AngoSat will be equipped with 44 C and Ku-band transponders.

transponder is the part of the satellite that combines the function of receiving the signal at a given frequency, performing the frequency conversion and transmitting the received signal at a new determined frequency.

Translating this technical wording, that number of transponders will directly influence the number of channels that we can use. Do not forget that this satellite will be used for communication: radio, TV, telephony, data transmission ...

Orbit, Angosat will be positioned at an altitude between 35800 km and 36000 km, that is, in a geostationary orbit, used exactly for satellites for communication purposes.

Finally, the operating frequencies. For this, it is necessary to know the band concept, which in the classification of satellites involves the frequency range for both the uplink (path traveled by the electromagnetic waves to the satellite) and the downlink (path of the waves from the satellite to the earth).

AngoSat will run on Ku band (10,7 - 12,75 GHz) and band C (3700-4200 Mhz), known bands between us.

Company contracted to build the satellite?

RKK Energiya, Russian company, specialized in the aerospace industry. They are responsible for the construction of spaceships, satellites, control devices… The expected lifetime of AngoSat is 15 years old.

  1. The country is not yet operating in Ku band, that is, frequency of military use, which is a pity for the country's sovereignty, as they still depend on other nations' satellites.
