It's official: the “MP3” format is dead. Companies terminate licensing

The Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS), creator of the MP3 stopped betting on the audio format. After completely changing the way we share and we hear music, the Institute announced that it will no longer renew the format encoding license.

It was during the late 80s and early 90s that Fraunhofer IIS created MP3, the most widely used digital format for compressing, storing and listening to music. After almost 30 years, the company decided to stop licensing this format.

“The institute's central argument is that MP3 is not the best audio option for 2017. In a statement, the organization states that other formats, such as“ AAC ”, are superior in compression, sound quality and are also more versatile. Streaming, radio and TV services already use other formats. The standard for iPhone e iTunes, for example, is the AAC ”.

Although the licensing of MP3 is coming to an end, the daily use of the format will not have the same purpose, files with that format will continue to be played as always, using the playback applications.
