Privacy and Security on the Internet [Part 3]

3019

There is little care when it comes to personal privacy and security and those close to us on the Internet and especially on social networks. At the past post we talked about the care that should be taken with the information we post on social networks: photos, locations and even financial information. Today the focus will be on certain behaviors that should be avoided when using social networks, comment sections and forums, and because social networks are a mirror of "real life" try to apply the advice in this context as well.

1 - Avoid responding to provocations, intimidations or threats

If you receive provocations, intimidation, threats or anything like that in comments on blogs, emails or social networks, for example, avoid responding. You may fall into unnecessary discussions, damage your image because of the words used, or even miss out on particular information because of the tension of the moment.

If you feel seriously threatened, humiliated or otherwise harmed, it is expressly advisable to keep a copy of everything and seek help from the legal authorities.

2 - Change your passwords periodically, especially for emails and social networks.

Although not an easy task, your password can be discovered in several ways: by keyloggers, that is, hidden programs that capture everything that is informed by the keyboard, security holes in the service in question or even by simply observing the password.

Believe me, situations like these are not uncommon. If someone is interested in knowing your habits and getting the password of your email, for example, you can observe everything you receive and send without manifesting. It is therefore recommended that you change your passwords regularly, at least every 3 months, as the new combination will cut off a potential attacker's access.

Also avoid using the same password for everything. If you register for an unknown site, the person responsible for that page may use the email and password that you entered in the application to try to access your mailbox. However, if you enter a different password in the registry, it will not succeed.

3 - Do not send your resume indiscriminately

When looking for a job, it is common for people to send their resumes to several companies. However, care should be taken with this practice, as this document says a lot about you. When sending resumes, do a search on the Internet to check if the desired company is suitable. If the company offers a resume registration service on its website, read the privacy statement to find out how your information is treated.

If you have a personal page, it is also not a good idea to make your resume available in detail. Prefer to report your professional experiences or your academic achievements. Pass on more information only when a company of your interest gets in touch with you.

Even with more news.
