Password thefts up 45% this year, says report

Kaspersky researchers have revealed that there has been an increase in the activity of cybercriminals stealing users' passwords through the Trojan-PSW, which is a type of malware designed to steal information from login and other data.

According to what was revealed in the investigation, which analyzed where data from 2020 and 2021 on the number of infection attempts and objectives of the attacks, there was a gradual increase in the number of victims. Just to exemplify, in September of this year, there were approximately 160.000 more targets than in April, which represented an increase of 45%.

For the specialists who participated in the report, over the last few months, they found that it was possible to witness a sharp increase in the number of infection attempts. In the third quarter of 2021, there was an increase of almost 30% in this indicator. Compared to the previous year, there was also an increase in the total number of detections, from 24,8 million to 25,5 million.

"As the statistics demonstrate, logins, passwords, payment details and other personal data continue to be a desirable target for cybercriminals and popular information on the black market.”, reported Denis Parinov, security expert at Kaspersky.

Based on this rise in hackers, experts recommend that users take additional steps to protect their accounts, including multifactor authentication methods.
