A Siemens, in conjunction with Frost & Sullivan, developed a comprehensive research project, described the current status of major industries across the African continent and identified challenges and opportunities.

The study, called “The start of digitization and its impact on Africa“, Considers growth forecasts and where the adoption of smart technology would be most beneficial in expanding industries to drive sustainable growth.

African countries must act quickly and decisively to become leaders in the world economic scenario. Digitization is providing the continent with the opportunity to accelerate growth and rapidly expand struggling economies - but it is a small window and decision makers need to establish a strategy now to succeed.

Some of the report's main conclusions are:

  • Adoption of digital technologies, innovation and a variety of digital customer offerings are expected to remain across various sectors, markets and geographic regions. The extent and impact of digital technologies is also expected to vary, favor business and industries that seek relevance and increase their contribution to international as well as existing domestic markets.
  • A stable supply of electricity is critical for digitization to flourish. By providing high levels of infrastructure and energy supply, Africa will be able to attract the necessary investment in various industry sectors.
  • The urban population in Africa is expected to grow to 56% by 2050. Such rapid urbanization will require robust infrastructure to ensure that these booming cities are centers of growth and trade, and still do not try to meet basic needs.

The study's conclusions are just a starting point. Siemens expects you to start a dialogue and provide a framework for some of the unique opportunities that exist.
