Magnetic tape

Young people from the 90's will have difficulties in understanding where to fit the expression “Cassette tape“,“ Cassete ”or“Magnetic tape“. But, the most experienced will remember that the cassettes had been successful for about 15-20 years, being the device most used for the storage of data.

With the emergence of the Compact Disc, the magnetic tapes began to be forgotten by the end users, being used mainly by companies, who are looking for a cheaper storage solution.

In thinking about these Sony developed the magnetic tape that stores up to 185 TB of data. This storage gives Sony credit for creating the magnetic tape with the highest memory storage density in history. With 148 GB per square inch.

In Angola, if we are looking for a commercial hard drive, we will find discs with capacities up to 4 TB, that is, with 46 times less capacity than Sony's cassette tape.

For those who still do not understand the amazement of this magnetic tape from Sony, you must take into account that before that, the magnetic tape of greater capacity, had a storage of 2 GB per square inch, reaching 2,5 TB. In other words, Sony improved the efficiency of the magnetic tape by 74 times.

For the time being this tape is not commercially available, but when it is, even end users will be tempted to use the “cassette” again.
