Earlier this week the Digital Democracy ChallengeTo hackathon 72-hour virtual and attached to Seedstars, which brings together technology enthusiasts from around the world, with the aim of creating solutions to strengthen democracy, according to a communiqué that reached our editors.
A startup divao, from Hong Kong, was the big winner of the event.
According to the creators of the event, this hackathon it was created to respond to the very low levels of democracy experienced in several countries, taking as an example the current situations in Hong Kong and Afghanistan.
The winning startup, divao and which received $10 as a prize, is a technological project that involves the creation of a private blockchain to allow the residents of a neighborhood to find, offer and exchange services, goods and other community values, such as spaces. This project provides a platform to grow a local community in a decentralized way.
In second place was the Nigerian startup SafeNow, which is a mobile application that aims to extend the appeal to the safety of families, friends and democratic nations in general. For the 2nd place won, the SafeNow received 8 thousand dollars.
And to finish the Top 3 of the winners, it was the Crowd Journal, startup from Kenya. Crowd Journal is a digital platform that amplifies voices less heard in traditional media, facilitating participatory journalism. With the platform, eyewitnesses from around the world can publish their experiences, giving voice to stories that would otherwise be avoided by the media. For the place conquered, the Crowd Journal received 6 thousand dollars.
According to organizers, selected startups have the power to help make a difference in the lives of people who live under strict rules, which is why the program offers training and funding to help reinforce their solutions.
