Tanzania started building its own helicopters

At a time when several economically “healthy” countries in Africa are having major problems due to the (free) fall in oil prices, a “poor” country decides to show the way to success.

In addition to Gold and Tourism, Tanzania decided to invest in technology, starting by building its own helicopters, in a project that will have its first batch of helicopters operational in 2018.

The helicopter prototype, which will have two seats, is in the final stage, under the responsibility of Arusha Technical School, Department of Mechanical Engineering, where there is also a factory dedicated to the production of various types of machines.

The project is gaining prominence across the country…

… The first helicopters made locally will be available to ordinary residents at affordable prices - explained the man behind the ATC helicopter project, Engineer Abdi Mjema.

The idea was conceived two months ago by two engineers from the Technical School of Arusha: Adisai Msongole and Abdi Mjema. The chassis, as well as structures for the pioneer helicopter is ready, the engine is now missing.

According to the team responsible for the project:

We had originally envisaged the two-seater helicopter to be used for surveillance, rescue and agricultural purposes. However, as the project takes shape, we can increase the number of places to transport more people ...

This is clearly only a step towards increasing the technological potential of Tanzania. Will the other countries in Africa follow the good example?
