Itel and Tecno are the top-selling smartphones in Africa in Q2022 48,0 with a unit share of XNUMX%, keeping shipments stable to the region, revealed the latest report from International Data Corporation (IDC).

According to data from the renowned company, smartphones branded by Transion (Tecno, Itel and Infinix) are the favorites of African consumers, in second place is Samsung with 25,8% and in third place are devices by Xiaomi, with 6,6, XNUMX%.

The report also shows that smartphone shipments to Africa fell by 7,9% in the second quarter of 2022, with a negative economic outlook, rising inflation and component shortages affecting markets in the region. Shipments of more basic devices, without access to mobile data, however, increased 10,6% in the quarter, where lower prices served as a viable alternative for consumers with low purchasing power.

On the other hand, IDC points out that the top three smartphone markets in Africa by unit share in the second quarter of 2022 were:

  • South Africa (16,6%)
  • Nigeria (13,8%)
  • Kenya (7,7%);

However, all three saw shipments decline in the quarter. Smartphone shipments to Egypt, which traditionally ranks in the top three in the region, fell by 62,7% in the quarter, resulting in a market share of just 4,3%, ranking sixth.

This sharp decline in Egypt was caused by restricted cell phone imports as the government refused to approve letters of credit for non-essential goods. Dollar shortages continued to hamper imports into the Nigerian market.

Looking at the wider African market, entry-level smartphones continue to be plagued by component shortages as vendors increasingly focus on mid-range and high-end models in an attempt to maximize their profits.
