Space technology will minimize effects of drought in the south of the country

A space science will be able to find innovative solutions to mitigate the drought problem that afflicts various regions of Angola, according to information from the National Space Program Management Office (GGPEN).

O GGPEN project, in collusion with an American partner, aims to explore the relationship between environmental and socioeconomic trends, using space science , “cujos results could constitute a great contribution” for the country, according to the words of the Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário Augusto Oliveira.

The leader who was speaking at the inauguration of the Satellite Control and Mission Centre, in the Funda area, in Luanda, stressed that among a set of GGPEN actions, emphasis on the Earth Observation Programme, which encompasses services and platforms, already in production, and thatwill make a great contribution to the national economy".

BUT: NASA-funded project to monitor drought launched

Regarding these innovative programs, we highlight “Tecnogest”, to monitor land infrastructure (roads, buildings and railways), “Tecnoecologia”, for ecological monitoring of the Angolan coast (oil spills) and “Tecnoagro”, for agricultural fields, contributing to precision agriculture and arable land management, he underlined.

Regarding the benefits, Mário Oliveira stated that the National Space Program includes projects aimed at increasing spatial literacy, with emphasis on children's spatial education, telemedicine, the expansion of banking services to the entire national territory, tele-education and administrative modernization of State.
