O Telegram, the platform that is the main competitor of Whatsapp, has announced in time through its CEO Pavel Durov, which reached the mark of 200 million monthly users. Assigning the brand to word-of-mouth advertising since they never invested in advertising on the app.

O CEO of messaging service Telegram suggested that a recent cyber attack on the encrypted chat platform was the work of the Chinese government as part of an attempt to stop using the app to coordinate ongoing protests in Hong Kong. Pavel Durov also said that the messaging service suffered a state actor-sized distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack yesterday and this morning after “garbage requests” flooded its servers and interrupted communications.

Attacks DDoS usually work through the use of botnets, often operating on stolen computers infected with malwares which bombard servers with redundant requests to prevent them from processing legitimate requests. Most of these requests came from addresses IP originating in China and seems to have coincided in time with the protests in Hong Kong, said the founder, Pavel Durov, in a post on Twitter .
