Truecaller reveals the most spam-affected countries in the world

The platform Truecaller released last week the findings of its report Truecaller Insights, an analysis of the top 20 countries affected by SMS and spam calls on 2019. The third edition of the report highlights that nuisance and junk calls continue to increase worldwide.

The study revealed that the 1,7 million daily active users of the Truecaller app receive a total of 25 spam calls per month, up 20% from last year's findings.

This year Truecaller also analyzed spam SMS trends around the world and was able to identify the top 20 countries that receive the most spam. Data show that the main countries that receive the most spam via SMS are emerging markets.

On 2019, Truecaller has helped identify 8,6 billion spam SMS worldwide.

Ethiopians are receiving the largest number of spam SMS in the world, with an average of 119 SMS per month. South Africans are second, with a shocking average of 114 SMS spam received every month. Fraudulent calls remain a major threat to consumers in South Africa (39%).

In 2019, Truecaller helped its users block and identify 26 billion spam calls, up 18% from last year. In addition, they helped identify 116 billions of unknown calls, an increase of 56% over last year.

  • The top 5 markets to receive the most fraud-related calls in the world are: Malaysia (63%), Australia (60%), Lebanon (49%), Canada (48%) and South Africa (39%).
  • The US remains on the list of the top 10 most spammed countries in the world. The market saw a 7% increase in spam calls compared to last year.
