UEM plans to increase internet use in Mozambique

A Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of the first internet connection in Mozambique with promises to continue to increase its use in its student community.

According to the rector of this institution, Manuel Guilherme Júnior, the UEM will also invest in the use of this technology as an instrument for disseminating and researching results in the context of creating a modern culture of pedagogical research, which assumes a universal standard.

The official was speaking at the opening of a conference organized by the UEM Informatics Center (CIUEM) to celebrate the internet milestone in Mozambique, which arrived in the country in 1992.

The academic stressed that the center has been working to ensure the effectiveness of technological connection services in the country, as well as the consolidation of its role in supporting other providers.

Guilherme Júnior pointed CIUEM as the main engine for the digital inclusion of thousands of people located in different parts of the country and also to offer possibilities to promote and value local culture and knowledge, with particular reference to national languages.

"By making the first internet connection for the country, UEM took an important step towards the creation and consolidation of the current ecosystem through the successful implementation of initiatives aimed at improving access to information technologies“He said.

The dean explained that UEM promoted several actions and initiatives that resulted in the adaptation of its course curricula to include ICT components and continues to manage critical infrastructure for the proper functioning of the internet, namely the .mz domain and the internet traffic point in Mozambique, in addition to drawing up the first policies and strategies for the sector.

Three decades later, this higher education institution recognizes that the current challenges involve a solution that respects technological means and the establishment of intelligent partnerships to attract more investments for the modernization of bureaucratic processes.

Indeed, its Strategic Plan (2020 – 2028) recognizes the interconnectivity of the world and the free availability of knowledge thanks to the evolution of information and communication technologies, as part of the global trends that influence its insertion in the modern world.
