A third of the Angolan organizations that participated in the first study carried out by KPMG on cybersecurity, declared having been the target of a cyberattack in the last 12 months, revealed the consultancy firm.

The financial, energy and natural resources, industry and information and communication technologies (ICT) sectors are the most affected by cyber threats, and one of the main consequences has been the compromise of business email, according to the first edition of 'Africa Cyber Security Outlook'.

The study covered interlocutors from various sectors of activity, considering both large (44%) and small and medium-sized companies (56%) and reveals that, in the face of threats, organizations are giving more and more importance to the application of protection measures.

About 75% of respondents indicated that they have cybersecurity strategies that are regularly updated, or adapted to the identified threats, which is the correct posture, as stated by Carlos Borges, head of KPMG Angola.

"Proactivity in identifying threats and defense mechanisms is essential“, said Carlos Borges, underlining that “the proliferation of digital services has increased the surface of cyber attacks and increased the urgency of adopting protective measures” and what is “It is essential that companies integrate, for example, cyber risk into their business strategies".

BUT: Computer attacks put pressure on several Angolan companies

A challenge arises in this chapter, since “nearly two out of three companies experience difficulties in recruiting and retaining skilled cybersecurity professionals“, according to the study.

Despite this challenge, companies recognize the importance of this issue, with 55% of respondents stating that their organizations plan to recruit soon for the cybersecurity area.

In addition, they have invested in a cybersecurity strategy, which, according to this study, could mean a 50% reduction in the probability of becoming victims of a major cybersecurity incident.
