Mobile phone operators in Angola have been one step ahead of several companies in Africa and beyond. Angola was the first African country to to test an 4G network. Now Unitel arrives with more news that will please the enthusiasts: VoLTE.

But what is this about “VoLTE”?

VoLTE - Voice Over LTE, represents the technology of video and voice calls over the LTE network, or, if you prefer, 4G network.

Currently, for voice calls, Unitel uses the GSM and WCDMA networks, while the 3G and 4G networks (HSPA / LTE) are responsible for guaranteeing data for mobile internet use.

With VoLTE the transmission of voice or video calls over the high definition data network (HD), through the IP protocol between two devices supporting 4G will be a reality. Calls are treated as data, and operate within the LTE frequency and standard.

Have you ever been tested in Angola?

According to Unitel, the first call through the VoLTE service was successfully carried out in Luanda in December 2015. Unitel's director and deputy general director, Amilcar Safeca, further stated that:

VoLTE technology is an innovative solution, with advantages for Unitel customers.

It is a solution in line with the operator's continued focus on providing innovative, high-quality services.

What are the advantages of VoLTE?

Let's start from the principle that we will be using the evolution of 3G networks, yes the term evolution can elucidate. When using the 4G network with VoLTE we will basically have: higher speed and more data transmission.

What does the end user gain from this?

  • HD Voice: The call quality in VoLTE is higher and in high definition. The comprehension method currently used delivers approximately 8kbps, while the audio comprehension performed by VoLTE can be up to 13kbps. Now you can serenade your beloved, with a quality bordering on perfection.
  • Extra Features: Possibility of offering an extra services package, which includes video calls, file transfers and image attachment.
  • Faster connection: VoLTE's calling time is considerably shorter compared to current calls, although (almost) no one controls how many milliseconds have to wait until the call is processed.
  • Lower battery consumption: VoLTE services consume less power from your device compared to VoIP services such as Skype, Viber, Whatsapp and company.

What are the disadvantages of VoLTE?

Not everything is roses, some details will not make end users happy:

  • Limited Technology for 4G Devices: If you don't have a 4G compatible device, then forget it! In other words, you will be “obliged” to have a high-end smartphone in order to enjoy VoLTE.
  • Available only to users of the same carrier: To make a VoLTE call, you will need to contact a user from the same operator, in this case Unitel.
  • Form of payment: “Data on Demand”, this is the method of charging with VoLTE, the user pays for data that is trafficked, that is, your data plan may end very quickly.

In March we will know how Unitel will tech.
