O WhatsAppmessaging application announced on Friday (02) December, that it will stop working on some old models of smartphones. Among them are certain devices with older versions of operating systems Android, Windows Phone e iOS.

After having implemented it, some new tools, such as video calls, sending images in GIF formats and others. WhatsApp now seems to simply want to work on modern, not very old, operating systems.

The smartphone models targeted are old and have largely fallen out of use in recent years. These are as follows:

  • iPhone 3GS or anyone using the Apple iOS 6 system;
  • Android smartphones using the Eclair 2.1 or Froyo 2.2 versions;
  • Smartphones with Windows Phone 7.

In addition, WhatsApp has warned users that as of the second half of 2017, the application will not work on many other products. Among them will be smartphones with BlackBerry OS e Black Berry 10, as well as products with Symbian, that Nokia used on some phones.

“When we started WhatsApp in 2009, the way people used smartphones was quite different than it is today. Apple's App Store, for example, existed only a few months ago. About 70% of smartphones sold at the time, had operating systems developed by BlackBerry and Nokia. The mobile operating systems offered by Google, Apple and Microsoft, which today total around 99.5% of current sales - were within less than 25% of the mobile devices sold at that time ”- Whatsapp on its official blog.

The initial plan was for these smartphones to also lose support at the turn of 2016 to 2017. WhatsApp, however, decided to give support for a few more months. It is unlikely, however, that this does not go beyond June than 2017.

So, will your phone be affected?
