WhatsApp will stop working on some 'button iPhones'; see the list

In a notification recent, WhatsApp has informed users of older versions of iOS that their devices will no longer be supported next year. This update alerts users on versions of iOS prior to 15.1 that they will no longer be able to use the app in the future, even if they try to access it using an earlier beta version.

WhatsApp currently supports iOS 12 and later, but with a future update, the app will require iOS 15.1 or later to function properly. To help affected users adjust to this change, WhatsApp is providing a warning period, giving them enough time to update their devices or consider alternatives.

One of the main reasons for this change is that newer versions of iOS include updated APIs and improved technologies that WhatsApp relies on to deliver new features. By not supporting older versions, WhatsApp will be able to streamline the app and introduce new features that simply wouldn’t be possible with outdated operating systems.

Furthermore, it’s easy to assume that WhatsApp has been closely monitoring the number of users still running older versions of iOS. The data could indicate that a significantly smaller share of users rely on these outdated systems. In doing so, WhatsApp wants to ensure a better overall experience for the majority of its users by focusing on the latest versions of iOS.

This change will primarily affect iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus users, as the latest iOS update available for these device models is iOS 12.5.7. These devices were released over 10 years ago, so the number of users still using WhatsApp on these models may be minimal.

As of May 5, 2025, WhatsApp will no longer support versions prior to iOS 15.1. This change applies to both the standard WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business. If you are using an older version of iOS, it is recommended that you update your device to continue using the app, or switch to a compatible iPhone that supports newer versions of iOS.
