A Microsoft ended the year 2018 as the most valuable company in the world, but also passed an important milestone for Windows. The latest Windows operating system 10 is now the most popular computer operating system in the world, finally tapping the market share of Windows 7 according to the Net Applications.
Windows 10 held 39,22% of the desktop operating system market share in December of 2018, compared to 36,9% of Windows 7. It's a statistic that took three and a half years for Microsoft, and demonstrates just how popular Windows 7 has been since its release at 10 years ago.
Microsoft planned to get Windows 10 to run one billion devices within three years of its release, but the company soon expanded that schedule after it became clear that Windows Phone would not help achieve that goal.
O Windows 10 is currently already running on more than 700 million devices including PCs, tablets, phones, and even Xbox One consoles. Windows 7 has held steady in recent years, despite Microsoft's huge effort to get PC users to upgrade for free and even a marketing campaign aimed at consumers who have computers of four or five years of age.
