In a month in which the International Women's Day, the agency BETC Sao Paulo presented the application Woman Interrupted, which aims to count the number of times a man interrupts a woman's speech.
In the last year, much has been said about the phenomenon Manterrupting, one of the types of violence against women, considered macho behavior, which is characterized precisely when she is unable to finish her speech because she is unnecessarily interrupted by a man.
According to the agency, the purpose of the Woman Interrupted app is to broaden the debate around Mantrupting and collaborate with raising awareness among the male audience, who often do not recognize behavior.
The platform was developed primarily for the work environment, where the attitude is more recurrent. Inspired mainly by the American election period, when Donald Trump interrupted Hillary Clinton by 51 times, during the first debate between the candidates.
In order to identify interruptions with greater precision, the application asks the user to calibrate and record his voice. Woman Interrupted takes advantage of the smartphone's microphone to analyze conversations and detect the number of interruptions during the period in which it is activated.
Analyzes are made in real time and transformed into data. Conversations are not recorded in the app, only the number of interruptions, duration and date. BETC foresees, in the medium term, the launch of a Global Dashboard that will present an overview of the data collected around the world.
Gal Barradas, founding partner and co-CEO of BETC São Paulo said: at first glance, it may seem like a small problem, but one that reflects deeper issues of gender inequality at work and in society. The application is a way of showing that, in fact, the interruption is real and alarming.
"We want men to ask themselves: am I doing this without realizing it? After all, what's the use of having more women in a meeting room if nobody listens to what they have to say? ”, said Gal Barradas.
