Just a month before the launch of its new console, Microsoft revealed sales data for its current console from the first day of sale until September of the current year. The information was published from a blog article of the Xbox. The same article reports that 80 million units units have been marketed.

This figure refers to the total number of consoles sold to retailers, not to end users. This means that instead of being in users' homes, some of these units may be on retail shelves and warehouses. Although the successor to Xbox 360 will be released on November 22, 2013, Microsoft is still keen not to lose, so it builds on the success of Xbox 360 and announced a series of Christmas packages from the same console.

The data disclosed by Microsoft do not differ much from the data VGChartz which counts with the total sales of several game platforms. At the top of the list is the almighty PlayStation 2 with a total of 157 million units sold worldwide, the PS3 and Xbox 360 are in eighth and ninth position on the table with 79 million and 78 million. Very modest positions when compared to the consoles that are in the top 5:

  1. PlayStation 2 - 157 million
  2. Nintendo DS - 154 million
  3. Game Boy - 118 million
  4. PlayStation - 104 million
  5. Wii - 100 million
