16 TB. Yes, 16 TeraBytes (15.36TB to be more exact), this is what the Samsung managed to reach for storage space on an SSD device. The event chosen for the ad was Flash Memory Summit, performed in the USA.

This storage device was named PM1633a, and is currently the the world's largest capacity internal storage unit. Hard drives with more storage space today have up to 10 TB.

SSDs are faster memories than traditional HDDs, since SSDs use only semiconductor devices, without risking damaging a magnetic element like HDs.

What is the science behind this record?

Nothing comes by chance and Samsung has been working to improve the use of V-NAND memories, which allows adding more capacity to the chips without increasing their physical size. On the other hand, new version of V-NAND has better energy efficiency, according to Samsung, the energy consumption of the chips is up to 30% lower compared to the technology of 128 gigabits (currently used)

This storage unit was produced especially for professional applications, such as servers, there is no information on release date, nor on prices, but it is estimated that a 16TB SSD unit can cost up to 5 USD.

Someone willing to take the risk?
