Youtube says goodbye to Flash and will support 5 HTML as default

Those who don't like “Flash”, which for a long time was the only great alternative for interactive content, can start celebrating, Youtube finally adopted HTML5 as the standard for playing videos.

The browsers compatible with this “new” format are:

  • Chrome
  • Internet Explorer version 11
  • Safari 8
  • Firefox (Beta)

Among the advantages of HTML5 stands out the compatibility with VP9 codec, which makes higher resolution videos consume less bandwidth (a reduction, a reduction in the order of 35%), which will facilitate users in Africa who have connections not so fast and often with limitations.

There is also an advantage in the security area, since HTML5 is compatible with encrypted media extensions (Encrypted Media Extensions), allowing YouTube to use a single player on different platforms, which is impossible with Flash.

For users who had already selected HTML5 as a standard (since Google has been testing the technology for 4 years), they will certainly not notice many differences. Probably some will start to uninstall "Flash" from their computers ... it was good while it lasted.
