I have closely followed the chapters and dramas about the entry of Amazon, the international electronic commerce giant, into Brazilian territory. Although it has nothing to do with our reality, there has now been an interesting debate that should throw some ink on this specific subject but that should make us think more about this topic in general and the controversial question:
Who owns the domain ".amazon"?
I don't know if you know, but it is now possible to have your own domain, for example ".menosfios", which would give for example to make a site "www.noticias.menosfios" or "www.downloads.menosfios" making lessfios abandon the “.com” domain. These generic top-level domain (gTLD) are administered by an international entity called the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Turning to controversy, when that reality became possible around mid-2011, Amazon filed the ".amazon" gTLD application that cost 185 $ 1,000. Now Brazil, Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador and Argentina have sent a notification to ICANN because they share the opinion that domain should be used to promote the Amazon, considered the largest tropical forest in the world. According to them the Amazon rainforest is a good of mankind and should be superimposed on a private company with interests of only a few individuals.
Is that cool? Should the Amazon be a good for all, should the laws overlap? After all, Amazon has already "purchased" the domain.
Thinking on this topic in general, as described above, and putting Amazons and South American countries aside, this is really a discussion that will be a headache for ICANN. This is certainly not the first case, nor will it be the last, but it must be the largest one the Corporation has ever dealt with. But how many processes could there be and how many examples could we give repetitions of names of organizations, companies, cities, etc around the world? Well, there are new chapters.
