A cryptocurrency mining or other virtual assets in Angolan territory will result in a prison sentence of up to 12 years, according to the new legislation approved by the National Assembly.
According to the deputies, Law n.3/24 of April 10 aims to protect the country from organized cryptocurrency mining networks and the national electrical system in view of the large volume of electricity that the computer systems used for this purpose require.
The document also reinforces that the creation of this penalty explains that the mining of these assets could even endanger “national energy security”.

During the analysis of the document, parliamentarians raised some concerns, with the deputy from the party with the largest number of seats, António Paulo, clarifying that the Law does not seem to have a correspondence between the problem it intends to solve, which is “criminalize mining”, which affects our electrical system and also the energy system, which raises national security problems.
