O cape verdean government intends to discuss in the coming days with the European Union (EU) support for strengthening the archipelago's cybersecurity, one of the three priority areas of collaboration announced by the Deputy Prime Minister, Olavo Correia.

"Three important topics that I will also take on this mission: the economy of the sea, energy and digital transition and, above all, cybersecurity and Internet security, where we want to have strong support from the European Union and we have positive signs in this matter“, Olavo Correia, looking ahead to the extraordinary ministerial cooperation meeting between the EU and Portuguese-Speaking African Countries (PALOP) and Timor-Leste (PALOP-TL), which will take place in Brussels from 28 February to 1 March.

Olavo Correia will lead the Cape Verdean mission in Brussels, as Minister of Finance and Business Development, in meetings that will be attended by the European Union Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen.

"It has to do above all with the promotion of good governance, the promotion of transparency and the creation of conditions for us to have a well-governed State that manages to govern based on results for the citizens. And we have to have an institutional framework that can allow us to do that. A legal framework in strong institutions, but also in highly qualified human resources. And we have more resources at the European Union level so that, within the framework of the PALOP and Timor-Leste, we can continue to invest in this area. Better institutions, more modern legal framework, but above all highly qualified human resources“, he further envisioned.

During these meetings, the financing agreement in preparation for the new project of “Support to Economic Governance in the PALOP-TL” between the Government of Cape Verde, representing those Portuguese-speaking countries, and the European Union should be signed.

Prior to the ministers' meeting, the technical staff of both parties will meet on February 28 to finalize the agenda and the documents that will be submitted to the appreciation of PALOP-TL ministers and representatives of the European Union, the event coinciding with 30 years of cooperation between the PALOP, Timor-Leste and the EU.

Aside from official meetings, Cape Verde takes a “strong agenda” to the European Union, in three fundamental areas in which the country intends to “make an important leap forward”, said Olavo Correia.

"A first area has to do with energy changes. The EU is an important partner of Cape Verde in promoting energy change and we have an ambitious project in this area. The second important area has to do with the sea, because it has to do with airport infrastructure and, above all, also, the connection of infrastructure with the energy transition and with the digital issue, which is also important, which will be on my agenda“, he pointed.

"A third area has to do with digital and, above all, what has to do with cybersecurity, the defense of our digital space, but also the creation of conditions for us to have strong institutions in Cape Verde in terms of promoting cybersecurity. and internet security. And we want the EU to be a strong partner for Cape Verde“He concluded.
