More than five hundred meters of 24-pair fiber optic cables from Angola Telecom were vandalized, last weekend, on section 105 between the city of Ondjiva and the municipality of Ombadja, province of Cunene, by unknown individuals.

According to the director of Angola Telecom in Cunene, Fernando Santos, speaking to journalists, he says that most likely the cables were removed at night, since during the day the technical team worked at the site.

Fernando Santos stresses that it is expected that in the next 90 days, a project for the recovery of the optical fiber will be returned, in the sense of reconnecting the province of Cunene with Huíla, which has been disconnected from the line for five years.

"Vandalism will condition the achievement of the established target, but we are making efforts to replace the cable, continuing the pace of work and recovering time”, he reiterated.

The Director also argued that, in order to comply with the schedule, two teams are working, one from Huíla and the other from Ondjiva, to carry out the crossing at the seat of the municipality of Cahama.

Finally, he added that there is a strict need to guarantee safety along the line, so that situations like this do not happen again, as it is a material that is very expensive on the market. The person in charge asked for the collaboration of the traditional authorities and the population to control the line, as well as to denounce individuals who try to vandalize it again.

Fernando Santos also underlined that they will plan actions to raise awareness in communities about the importance of fiber optics in the development of the province, so that they can be more attentive.
