Currently many of the championships already use VAR (Video technology referee) and the African continent has decided not to be left behind, as the African Football Confederation (CAF) has approved the use of this technology for the 2018 Champions Cup and Confederations Cup finals.

The Executive Committee of CAF met in Sharm El Sheikhin Egypt from 27 to 28 in September of 2018 and made the decision to take a further step towards the wider introduction of VAR in CAF club competitions. This is not the first time that the governing body of African football will use the VAR in one of its competitions. In February of 2018, the technology was used for the departure of the Supercopie of the CAF between the Wydad Casablanca and the TP Mazembe in Casablanca, Morocco.

Second Amr Fahmy (Secretary General of CAF), “This is a historic moment for African football. This clearly shows that CAF is determined and committed to interclub competitions and will bring the latest and most innovative technologies to make it better. “We (CAF) are the first confederation to use VAR in the final of the Club's competitions.

It is also important to note that the decision also comes at the same time that the Football Federation of Egypt is in the process of implementing the same technology in all Premier League matches in that country after some disputed referee decisions involving the main teams.
