MenosFios Office. Is it better to format or restore your computer?

1004

A few years ago, formatting was the most appropriate process to delete all files from a computer, but things have changed and, nowadays, restoration is the most appropriate procedure, considers the DECO Protest. After all, what is the difference between the two methods? We explain today in Lessfios Office.

"Until recently, to perform this task, the user would have to know how to format a computer. Formatting is the action of erasing all data present in a digital memory (it can be the computer's hard drive, an external disk, a pen, a memory card, a CD, etc.) and preparing the device to receive new data. Currently, with the latest versions of Windows, especially Windows 10 and Windows 11, restoring is the most appropriate procedure“, reveals several experts.

According to DECO, “the two operations are similar, but not the same: formatting is a more radical operation than restoring“. In other words, if something goes wrong in the formatting process it is “much more difficult to recover lost information".

In general, “for the common user, restoration is much simpler and safer to carry out, with the result of the operation being sufficient for most users. In this, the operating system is reinstalled, and the option between keeping or removing your files is also presented.".

How to restore your computer (in three steps)

  1. Back up your data - "This preliminary operation is very important. You can create this backup on an external hard drive with or without a network connection (NAS), a cloud storage service, another computer, etc. Whatever the method, make sure you don't skip this step as you run the risk of losing your data forever.";
  2. Create a recovery drive - “A recovery drive is an external memory unit, which you can create, for example, on a USB pendisk, a memory card or an external hard drive. This drive can be very useful for reinstalling Windows if your computer has a serious hardware failure.";
  3. Restore your computer - Windows"If your computer has Windows 11, open Settings and select System > Recovery. If it's Windows 10 or 8, select Update & Security > Recovery. On the next page, select Restore”; MacOS: “Click the Apple icon in the top left corner and select System Preferences. In the top menu, click System Preferences and select Initialize content and settings. You must enter your system password".
