I have not yet had the chance to see (even from afar) the but I was able to see the evolution (physical, at least) of the Luanda Media Library, which was inaugurated yesterday by the President of the Republic, accompanied by the Deputy Minister of Science and Technology, Pedro Sebastião Teta.

According to him:

... the main purpose of Angola's media library network project is to equip the country with a set of infrastructures using the latest information technologies.

Let's go to what matters, the constitution of the media library (from Luanda)

  • 2,900 square meters of floor area,
  • capacity of two thousand people per day,
  • auditorium with 120 seating capacity
  • Free Wifi system
  • 130 desktop computers and laptops (from the photos we can see some Mac, heavy investment ...)

An interesting part that was quoted in the article:

The 9.600 project is valued at $ 1,000 25 iPads, five video devices and games, file with maximum capacity for 50 thousand books and DVDs, cultural area for 400 people, cataloging area, computer science, administration, canopies, conference, bookstore, green areas, among others.

25 iPads for !? If we have desktops, notebooks, are these tablets for? (Whoever can answer, please ...)

Still, it is not every day that we can access digital libraries in Angola, even more with free wifi network (can you understand the title of the article?). During the next week, I will try to be in the Media Library to test the network (and other resources). See you there?

  1. Great investment.
Answering the question, I calculate that these twenty-five iPads are solely and exclusively to familiarize the Angolan people with this technology. As it is public, it has young people trained to educate citizens, as well as to maintain the equipment.
