[NewSpace Africa 2024] Space applications and communications among the highlights

Remote sensing tools, geospatial data applications, satellite communications, navigation systems and other emerging space applications are some of the highlights of the 3rd edition of the conference “New Space in Africa, 2024 edition”, an event that focuses on the emerging African space sector.

The event being held under the motto “The Role of Space in Reducing the Poverty Gap in Africa”, the 3rd edition of “NewSpace Africa”, takes place in Luanda until April 5th, at the Talatona Convention Center , in Luanda, where it will bring together, in addition to others, renowned international lecturers and speakers, experts, institutions from the most varied sectors of activity.

Highlights of the event are aimed at improving the agriculture, security and defense, communications, climate resilience and health sectors, ultimately encouraging infrastructure development.

In total, the conference attracted participation from 257 organizations, including African and foreign government officials, ministry representatives and heads of national space agencies.

For the spokesperson, Gilberto Gomes, the event will also feature venture capital investors who will analyze, with national institutions, the advantages of concluding deals and memorandums of understanding.

Participants will also bring additional knowledge to share with national Startups, in an innovative environment and exchange of experiences, he said.

He highlighted that attracting foreign investment to Angola is among the main benefits of the event, which demonstrates Angola's involvement in the African space arena, with “a very important step forward” in the sector of training international level personnel.

The conference's agenda featured on the first day a session for the signing of partnership agreements in the space domain, including interventions by government representatives and experts as well as several panels dedicated to different topics.

The opening session was marked by interventions from the Minister of Telecommunications, Information Technologies and Social Communication, Mário Augusto da Silva Oliveira; the general director of Space in Africa, Temidayo Oniosun; and the AU Commissioner for Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Mohammed Belhocine
