The American giant plans to abandon production of 2,5-inch discs at a speed of 7200RPM by the end of this year. This decision affects the following disk models: Momentus 7200.4, 7200.2, Momentus Thin 7200 and Momentus XT. Its great motivation is now directed towards the growth of SSD drives in the market, which represents great competition in the fast hard disk market for laptops, which is growing more and more. It is our knowledge that classic HDDs, however fast, do not stand a chance with SSDs today, when it comes to read / write speed.

2,5 disks at the speed of 7200 tend to be quite expensive and may not even be the favorite choice of laptop manufacturers. SSDs are gaining a lot of space on the market at a slightly cheaper price than 7200RPM's HDDs that lose performance with a Solid State Drive.

According to electonista.com, Seagate's decision is somewhat surprising, since they do not market SSD drives, only Hybrid drives, such as the Momentus XT. It remains for us to wait for what time will tell, and to see how Seagate will react with the growth of SSDs, or whether it will enter this market with all its strength or whether it will continue to perfection the series of hybrid drives like the Momentus XT and whether it will be marketed at an affordable price.

As it is not possible to abandon the game without any triumph, it is not even 24 hours after Seagate announced the abandonment of the production of 2,5-inch HDD with 7200RPM and the company announces new products.

Seagate once again shows us that it will not easily leave the market when it comes to solutions for portable systems, they announced the third generation of hybrid hard drives.

Seagate SSD

Hybrid hard drives have quickly become a standard, and Seagate has already announced that its new series of products that will have the combination of flash memory and classic hard drives , will be called SSHD. Hybrid disks will be available for both desktop and laptop computers. And a version of the new 2,5-inch SSHD will only have 7 mm thick to be compatible with modern ultrabooks.

They promise a generous storage space with relatively low cost, 3,5 SSHD will be available in the following 1TB and 2TB capabilities. Notebook users who wish to take advantage of this new series of products will only have available 500GB or 1TB storage. On all models, the amount of flash memory will equal 8GB.

While the price of SSDs have not yet fallen to a competitive edge with classic HDDs, with these products, Seagate can provide the perfect solution for those looking for an alternative space and speed.
