The connectivity and Internet speed tester, Ookla, last month released its global market analysis, ranking all countries in terms of the fastest fixed and mobile broadband Internet speeds.

Countries are ranked based on their speed score, which incorporates a measure of each country's total download and upload speed to rank network performance (90% of the final speed score is attributed to download speed and 10% remaining to upload speed because online experiences are typically more affected by download speed).

Ookla places more emphasis on average speeds as they represent what most mobile internet customers will experience in their everyday lives. Below are the 10 African countries with the fastest Internet in 2021:

10. Burkina Faso – Global ranking: 121

  • Average Download Speed: 25,45 Mbps
  • Average upload speed: 9,78 Mbps
  • Latency: 78 ms

Burkina Faso's leading ISPs include Orange Burkina Faso, Onatel Burkina Faso and Virtual Technologies & Solutions.

9. Western Sahara - Global Ranking: 115

  • Average Download Speed: 27,00 Mbps
  • Average upload speed: 16,63 Mbps
  • Latency: 47 ms

Western Sahara is currently disputed territory in the far northwest of Africa. About 20% of its territory is claimed by the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, while the remaining 80% is administered by Morocco.

The region mainly depends on Moroccan ISPs for Internet access.

Angola has a global classification of 157 for the fixed network, with an average Download of around 14.56 Mbps, Upload of 7.80 Mbps and a latency of 34 ms. In relation to other countries in Africa, Angola occupies the 29th place on this list.

For mobile networks, Angola occupies the 97th place worldwide, with average download around 23.55 Mbps, Upload 9.78 Mbps and latency of 35 ms. In relation to other countries in Africa, Angola occupies the 9th place on this list.
