Probably looked at the title and had some doubts about the tal root server installed in our country. But do not worry, we'll try to explain in a few steps.

What is AAPSI?

AAPSI, Angolan Association of Internet Service Providers is an organization that brings together internet providers in Angola, in order to foster the development of the internet in Angola. Among its members we can count companies such as: Unitel, Movicel, Multitel, MSTelcom, ACS, Netone… (see full list)

What is a root server?

When we open a website we usually write the name “www.menosfios.com” (a very random example) But for this information to be understood by network devices it is necessary to convert it to an IP address. This conversion is one of the missions of the DNS (Domain Name Server) server.

There are 13 root DNS servers in the world, they are responsible for “knowing” the entire network. To guarantee the continuity of the network, several copies were created, one of which has now arrived in Angola.

Still have questions about how it works? Watch the video below:

How did Angola get a replica of the root DNS server?

It resulted from an agreement AFRINIC, ISC (Internet Systems Consortium) and AAPSI. The Angola Association of Internet Service Providers (AAPSI) joined the project Anycast Root Server which aims to increase the number of root server replicas in the African region.

What do we gain by that?

Lower latency, that is, the time it takes the server to “convert” our domain name to an IP address. This will be reflected in the page load time.

In Africa, the countries that already have a replica of the root server are: South Africa, Malawi, Egypt, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Tanzania, Kenya and Rwanda. So Angola joins this select list.
