1585

Since taking over the leadership of Twitter, after buying the platform for 44 billion dollars, Elon Musk has not hesitated to start making changes, from firing executives and employees to confirming a subscription model of eight dollars a month and other decisions.

Even after the final decision on the purchase of Twitter was made, several users who were more apprehensive about the future of the social network had already begun to consider moving to other platforms. Now, with the closing of the purchase and with the series of changes implemented by Elon Musk, many are “abandoning ship”, opting for alternative social networks.

Are you a Twitter user but thinking about transitioning to another platform? It is with this in mind that in today's episode of Lessfios Office, together with Sapo Tek, we show a set of social networks that claim to be alternatives to Twitter.

  • Mastodon

Mastodon, whose popularity has grown significantly over the last few days, emerged in 2016 and already at that time had intentions of asserting itself as an Open Source and decentralized version of Twitter.

Through it, users can create or join communities in different instances, which correspond to specific servers and even local domains, with their own moderation rules.

Like Twitter, publications have a character limit, in this case 500, and it is also possible to share other types of content, such as images, videos or audio files. After creating an account on the platform you can go looking for servers you can join. Mastodon also has mobile versions, both for Androidas for iOS.

  • Plurk

According to the creators of this social network, which has existed since 2008, Plurk gives users the possibility of creating a kind of “diary” of the events in their life, in publications with a limit of 360 characters, and with a horizontal timelime. In addition to the aspects that bring it closer to Twitter, the social network has another one similar to that of Reddit, with its own “karma” system. In addition to the online version, Plurk is available for Android for iOS.

  • WT.Social

WT.Social, created by Jimmy Wales, co-founder of Wikipedia, wants to be a “non-toxic social network”, declaring right on its main page that it does not let advertisers make decisions and that it does not sell user data, also being a space where it is possible to directly edit false or misleading content and where those who do not have good intentions do not enter.

As the person in charge explained during the Web Summit 2020, the platform is not governed by recommendation algorithms and one of its main objectives is to make people able to make sense of the information they find online.

On the platform, users gather around discussion communities, called SubWikis, and can share both text and links, images and videos, among other forms of content. For now, the WT.Social there are no mobile versions yet.

  • Not me

Amino was made for those who want to “dive deep” into their interests and find other people who share them. The platform allows you to create communities centered on a variety of topics.

In addition to the more traditional sharing of content by the members that make up the communities, moderators can create more interactive publications, such as polls and challenges, and there is also space to chat via voice calls, both public and private, and even to enter " rooms” to watch videos together. THE Not me is available for Android e for iOS.

  • cohost

Created by a team of three developers and designers, Cohost is a social network that promises an experience that is not based on algorithms, with the privacy of its users as one of its main focuses.

This platform has a feed with publications that are presented in chronological order, making it possible to follow other users' own pages. The creators claim that Cohost will "never sell" user data, nor ads, and that they have no intention of selling the company to anyone who wants to change these policies.

cohost it is still in development, although it is already possible to create accounts. It should be noted, however, that having an invitation from someone who is already part of the platform speeds up the whole process, otherwise you will have to wait for your request to create an account to be analyzed, only then will you be able to start publishing and explore the social network in more depth.

  • bluesky

Presented in 2019 by Jack Dorsey, at the time, still CEO of Twitter, the Bluesky project aims to create a “open and decentralized protocol for social networks”, developing a new type of social platform that passes control from companies to users.

In May of this year, the project launched the first version of the protocol on which the platform is based and, in October, it presented an improved version of the same, which is now named “AT Protocol".

The project's social network is still under development, but anyone interested can join the waiting list to experience the Beta version before the official launch.
