[Inquiry] AngoSat-3 is a good investment for Angola?

2982

One of the most debated news in May: President of the Republic approves construction of AngoSat-3, the 3º Angolan Satellite, that is, the 3º direct investment in satellites for Angola.

How does Angola currently have access to satellite services?

Telecommunications companies in Angola make direct contracts with the giants of the satellite industry: Intelsat, Eutelsat, Inmarsat, Telesat ... it is an open market and, in principle, Angolan companies can look for contracts with the best cost benefit.

The currency “game”

The “currency crisis” in Angola has made companies open their eyes: it is not so simple to pay tens of thousands of dollars every year to keep satellite communications working.

Fiber is salvation ?!

In the online forums / online tv / radio, we can find people to indicate an alternative: let's forget the satellites and bet on fiber optic throughout the country and we will save money. But will we really spare?

Connections via fiber to the main cities of the country, is a perfectly possible plan. The largest mobile phone operator in Angola has made great strides in this direction, but the costs for fiber in the last mile (for the final customer) can make this investment unattractive to other companies.

AngoSat-1, the right initiative

On 26 December 2017, Angosat-1, the first Angolan satellite was placed in orbit from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan (Russia), four months after the launch, there was official confirmation of the "irreversible loss of ANGOSAT- 1 "that would put Angola as the seventh African country to have its own communications satellite in orbit. The first Angolan satellite already had 40 percent of its capacity reserved for operators, 10 percent for national security and defense services and other 10 percent for social actions (such as Education and Health sectors and small businesses). As anticipated the deal, AngoSat-2 is being built, scheduled for release to 2020.

But let us return to the central point: What do LessFios readers think about the investment in AngoSat-3?

63.6% of respondents to the survey did not consider AngoSat-3 a good investment.

The 2018-2022 national development plan makes several references to the use of satellites for the country's growth. If the plan is followed to the letter, the investment will pay off: ensuring that communications are available to the most remote parts of the country and investing in education, health, agriculture ...

If you did not participate in our survey, it is still time to respond in the comments: AngoSat-3, a good investment?
