Virtual reality (RV) is the holy grail of the gaming industry. Many promises are made. Expectations are high. Marketing campaigns are authentic works of art. And the result is often less than expected. The movie "The Island" represents the virtual reality with which we dream. Total immersion in a virtual world. But we may still have to wait some time for this to come true.

Virtual reality was a popular theme in the 90 years, but during the transition to the new millennium, it was almost forgotten. This until the Oculus Rift. And while for the time being the viability of RV systems as a marketable product is still uncertain, more and more companies are jumping on board. This time it was Sony that, after months of rumors (actually think it was one of the most barely kept secrets of the entire industry in recent times), finally announced the Morpheus project, a virtual reality viewer for PS4.

The announcement occurred during GDG 2014 (Game Developers Conference) in San Francisco, United States of America. The Morpheus project, which for the moment is just a prototype, has been developed since 2010 and initially focused on PS3. According to Sony itself, one of the purposes of having presented the product in GDG was to get opinions from various developers present, since for her RV is the next innovation for PlayStation.

"The industry is growing and that is creating new possibilities for players," said Shuhei Yoshida, president of SCE Worldwide Studios. “Advances that were previously impossible today are already a reality. And PlayStation is determined to bring these incredible experiences to players, ”he said. He also talked about how VR could well define the future of the gaming industry.

The prototype will be available soon for developers, but Sony took the opportunity to announce some partners and in-house studios already developing games that will use the device, such as Epic Games, Crytek and Sony London.

Below are the specifications of the prototype of the Morpheus project:
