The communications regulatory agency in Lesotho (LCA) and the Zimbabwe Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (POTRAZ) have started to implement a system to monitor national and international telecommunications traffic.
The system is expected to help increase revenue assurance, combat network fraud and reinforce billing integrity across all communications networks available in countries and will be provided by the developer of regulatory technology and Big Data Analytics Global Voice organization Group (GVG).
“With these partnerships, GVG enables sound telecommunications metrics for tax collection, fraud detection and market compliance with regulations to protect consumers and operators in Lesotho and Zimbabwe,” said James Claude, GVG's CEO.
“The RegTech solution provided by GVG enhances the supervisory capabilities of LCA and POTRAZ for the benefit of all stakeholders, including the State, industry and all citizens. By allowing regulators to see, in real time, what is really happening in the telecommunications sector, it dramatically improves the governance of a sector that plays an important role in the socioeconomic development of both countries. ”
The establishment and execution of the Telecommunications Traffic Monitoring System in Zimbabwe is part of the strategic agenda for the adoption of new technologies in the country's regulatory framework.
On the African continent, there has been a slow but gradual adoption of technological solutions by regulatory agencies and authorities to assist them in their supervisory role. The step taken by regulatory agencies in Lesotho and Zimbabwe is a step towards making their supervisory functions more robust and efficient.
