Students, teachers and researchers at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) are being trained in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), with a view to promoting research and innovation activities for the social and economic development of Mozambique.

The rector of UEM, Manuel Guilherme Júnior, said that the institution values ​​the use of technologies as a tool that can contribute to raising the quality of teaching and learning, research and university management.

"Extracurricular activities involving teachers, researchers and students, in collaboration with partners, can also result in a curricular adequacy of technology-based courses”, he said.

According to the dean, UEM recognizes the knowledge economy and society of ICT, which is why it has been strengthening its capacity to use technologies as pedagogical tools.

"Encouraging activities related to innovation and entrepreneurship involving students can induce creativity and result in startups aimed at solving society's problems"He said.

The training is part of the Summer School project, launched by UEM. The program has funding of around 1.1 million euros, of which 950 thousand granted by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), 129 thousand co-financed by the Polytechnic of Milan and more than 82 thousand by the Eduardo Mondlane University.

In turn, the director of AICS, Paolo Sertoli, referred that the Summer School also aims to improve the technological capabilities of students to facilitate access to the job market through specialization.

"They will also be able to participate in short courses, about three months, in different modules taught in collaboration with the Polytechnic of Milan”, he assured.

Paolo Sertoli hopes that students know how to take advantage of the opportunity that the project offers, that in addition to the general and theoretical training that UEM provides, they can improve, know and master the development of technological applications with innovative tools for the elaboration, for example, of end of course.

The project, which lasts for three years, plans to train 50 students each year, and the first edition includes three courses, namely Web Development with Python and Django, Mobile Applications with Flutter and Data Mining.
