According to the latest report from the specialized company Ookla, which analyzes the Internet around the world on a quarterly basis, the performance of the operator owned by the Mozambican State is above the 21,46 Megabytes per second (Mbps) of the fastest operator in Senegal and close to the 30,13 Mbps from the operator in Côte d'Ivoire, but also above operators in some countries in South America and Asia.

The Ookla report, which globally analyzes the network in 52 countries, also states that in the fourth quarter of 2023, the tmcel it also had “the highest mobile network consistency” of 91,6% – at least a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps and a minimum upload speed of 1 Mbps – of the time, among the country’s three mobile operators.

"Of Mozambique's most populous cities, Maputo had the fastest average mobile and fixed download speeds, at 26,33 Mbps and 14,65 Mbps, respectively.“, reads the report.

In September, the President of the Tmcel Management Committee, Mahomed Adamo Mussá, stated, in Maputo, that the Mozambican state-owned telecommunications company is in a “new rebirth”, as part of the revitalization of operations until May 2024, budgeted at 132 million dollars (123 million euros).

"The first two months were spent developing an 18-month plan to turn the company's situation around (…) That's what we're going to do: a new rebirth“, stated Mahomed Adamo Mussá.

The shareholders of the mobile and fixed telecommunications operator approved, in May, a Management Committee, plans to revitalize the company and reduce costs, along with a study on the profitability of cost centers.

The administration showed growth in several indicators with the inclusion of new products and explained that the project to expand and modernize Tmcel's telecommunications network, budgeted at 132 million dollars (123 million euros) and financed by China's Eximbank, with completion scheduled for May 2024, has already been completed at 57%, which involved, among other investments, the installation of a further 778 telecommunications signal transmission antennas, out of a forecast of 1.350.

Still within the scope of the modernization and expansion of the network, which began in January 2022, after “almost ten years without investment“, Tmcel, which operates a support network of 7.600 kilometers of optical fiber and 8.500 kilometers of access networks, has already increased broadband coverage from 10 to 400 gigabits per second (Gbps).

"We have already covered all provinces in the country, thus fulfilling our commitment made last September to modernize the Lichinga network and introduce 4.5G in this capital city“, added Adil Ginabay. The start of operation of the new network in the capital of the province of Niassa would end up taking place on December 8th.

Currently, Tmcel's market share in Mozambique is 10 to 12%, in terms of active customers, but the objective assumed by the management committee is to exceed 25% in the medium term.
