Rwanda to have its first smartphone factory

In October of last year, the technology company Mara Corporation, based in Rwanda, reported that it was about to invest 100 million USD in South Africa to make affordable, high-tech smartphones.

But now the same company, together with government officials in Rwanda, have announced the launch of a factory to produce smartphones, in addition to improving access to digital services in the country. The project was released by the authorities of the supervising ministry, during a meeting with the Permanent Parliamentary Committee on Education, Technology, Culture and Youth to explain issues related to ICT observed in that country.

Second Paula Ingabire(Minister of ICT and Innovation in Rwanda), negotiations with the Mara Corporation, a pan-African technology company, to establish the factory is currently underway and that by April this year, it may start activities in the country .

And when will that factory start working?

When the factory starts producing smartphones, people will have the opportunity to pay in installments over a period of 24 months. The minister also assured that she will work with telecommunications companies to find ways to reduce prices in the use of the Internet. Just to get an idea, the Rwanda Regulatory Authority recently reported that Internet penetration in the country reached 47,7% in September of 2018.
