the state oil company Sonangol will produce green hydrogen from 2024, based on a memorandum of understanding with the German companies Gauff and Conjucta.

According to a statement from the Angolan company, this innovative measure is the result of various technical and economic feasibility studies, previously carried out, as well as for the financing, construction and operation of a factory for the production of green hydrogen and derivative products in the country.

The production of green hydrogen by Sonangol is aimed at selling it throughout Angola, as well as outside the country, mainly in Germany, in addition to creating several job opportunities.

For Diamantino Azevedo, Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, quoted in the note, underlines that “despite the production of alternative energy, Angola will continue to explore hydrocarbons, with due attention to sustainability and respect for the environment".

Gaspar Martins, President of Sonangol, stresses that this memorandum is to position the company in the hydrocarbons sector, since that is how “bets on the diversification of its business portfolio, which includes the production of energy from renewable sources, production and commercialization of green hydrogen and its derivatives, biofuels, among others, through its Research and Development Center".

It should be noted that Sonangol will now focus on the development of the detailed technical project and the hiring of the contractor, as well as other aspects, since the production of green hydrogen is already starting in 2024.
