Despite the latest sales, the PlayStation 4 Sony sold 100 million units, making it the best-selling console to reach that number. In its latest sales results report, Sony revealed that it sold 3,2 million PS4s between March 31 and June 30 this year, after announcing that 96,8 million units had been sold in the previous quarter. This means that it reached the 100 million mark in 5 years and seven months.
Sony also revealed that for the first time users are buying more digital games via downloads than physical disks, marking a trend that has been underway for some time.
Despite its “half decade” age, PS4 sales were not taken into account until recently, with 17,8 million units in 2018 sold, down only 1,2 million over 2017. However, it gave a remarkable growth in the last quarter, and Sony has already warned that it expects 2019 a decrease in sales to fall more than originally forecast in the last quarter.
In other segments of Sony, smartphone revenue fell 15% in the last quarter, continuing what appears to be an unending trend. It sold less than half the number of smartphones it made during the same period last year, only 900.000 in total. To get an idea of how bad this is, the total units sold in 2018 was less than half of 2017 and, so far, 2019 is half of 2018.
