It will not only be Angola to have a new mobile operator, after operating in Cape Verde, Zambia has granted a new license to the mobile operator for Unitel.

A Unitel International Holdings BV, has promised to invest more than 350 million USD through a local unit and will compete with market leaders such as MTN Group Ltd. and the Bharti Airtel Ltd.

How was Unitel granted this mobile network license?

After a two-year analysis, the Zambian telecommunications regulator concluded that more competition is needed to improve services in the country and lower prices. However, according to information provided by the Information and Communication Technology Authority of that country, only two companies expressed interest and one of them is Unitel.

Making a comparison, during the first half of 2017, the signatures of active mobile phones in Zambia increased 3,4 percent to 12,4 million, according to that country's Ministry of Finance, compared with a population of about 16,5 million. The MTN of Johannesburg had about 48% of the market at the end of 2016.

Will Unitel conquer the Zambian market?
