Galaxy Gear

Technology companies have decided to expand their “arsenal”. We no longer see so many investments around ordinary computers (whether desktops or laptops), the focus has shifted to smart phones (smartphones) and, more recently, “wearable devices“, A category that includes Google Glass and smart watches.

Speaking of smart watches, during the past week we had all the attention turned to the Samsung event, where it announced its “Galaxy Gear”, Samsung's version of a smart watch.

In terms of hardware, the device impresses:
  • Screen: 1.63 inches, Super AMOLED, with 320 x 320 resolution
  • Processor: 800MHz
  • RAM memory: 512MB
  • Storage: 4GB
  • Camera: 1.9 Megapixel
  • Audio: 2 microphones and 1 loudspeakers
  • Connectivity : Bluetooth 4.0
  • Embedded: Accelerometer and gyroscope
  • Battery: 315 mAh, approximately 1 day duration.

With these characteristics, on a watch, it's worth it, is not it ?!

Let's move on to the Software:

This “watch” will only be compatible with top Samsung devices, and when we talk about top, we are referring to the galaxy note 3 and Galaxy Tab 10.1 Version 2014, which are not yet available on the market. Other devices that may be compatible with the watch, provided they have the version 4.3 Android operating system.

Samsung promises more than 70 applications to the device, so far only 12 have been displayed.

Price:

Here we have the Achilles heel of the “Galaxy gear”, 299 USD. Yes, this device is more expensive than some smartphones.

Now let's go to the pros and cons:
  • Being able to make calls and connect to S-Voice (Samsung's voice assistant), without having to take your smartphone out of your pocket. Very good.
  • Take pictures discreetly with the watch. It might be useful… Ask the James Bond.

But, a watch with a battery that lasts only 25 hours, that depends on a smartphone to work and that costs so much… minus points.

Now I can repeat the title question: Is it worth buying the "Smart Watch" from Samsung?
