O WhatsApp released an update that lets you share 30-second voice recordings in the States, which disappear within 24 hours.
WhatsApp Statuses were introduced in 2017 however, the options to post photos, videos, GIFs and also text messages were added. Adding voice messages to states comes as a result of the popularity of this type of communication in the messaging app.
