In 1949 Von Neumann did academic work on the theory of self-replicating computer programs, where he described how a computer program could be designed to reproduce or replicate itself. Von Neumann's work was later published as the "Theory of automatic self-reproduction", then became public for the first time one of the ways in which future computer viruses act.
Von Neumann's theory was used as a model for the development of several computer viruses in later years, such as the first virus ever, the Creeper System, a virus that had spread in ARPANET in 1971.
Von Neumann's project for a self-reproducing computer program is considered the first type of computer virus in the world, and he is considered the theoretical father of digital virology.
