Angola gains a state-of-the-art seismic network

1685

Angola now has a seismic network made up of five stations, made up of state-of-the-art sensors that help transmit in real time to the central server of the National Institute of Meteorology and Geophysics (INAMET), as well as information on the movement of the earth's crust (tectonic plates).

Distributed across the provinces of Bengo, Cuanza Sul, Lunda Norte, Moxico and Huíla, the technological seismic sensors come within the scope of the INAMET Modernization Project, where they enable seismic monitoring, instigating the preservation of life and support to different socioeconomic sectors, in particular to civil construction.

It should be noted that in the last week, INAMET recently recorded a light class earthquake, with a magnitude of approximately 3.1 MW (on the Richter scale) that occurred on the 14th of this month at 00:41 am (local time), whose epicenter was located in in the municipality of Gabela, province of Cuanza Sul.

BUT: INAMET will benefit from technological modernization to anticipate occurrences

Thanks to the new technology, an intense earthquake was also observed, with a magnitude of 6.7 MW (on the Richter scale) with a depth of 190 km, whose epicenter was located in Neuquen, Argentina.

The event was recorded by INAMET at 03:05 am (local time) and according to reports in the Argentine press, no victims or serious material damage were identified in the region of Neuquem.
