Technological advancement is one of the “Achilles heels” to stop the digital piracy in Angola, according to Diogo Sebastião, from the National Union of Artists and Composers - Society of Authors (UNAC-SA).

Speaking at a seminar on “The Functioning of the National Intellectual Property System”, which brought together several specialists to reflect on the structure, organization and functioning of the National Intellectual Property System, the UNAC-SA representative stressed that social networks constitute a threat, that is, it is “the headaches” that lead many musicians to complain about piracy.

He recognized that, even with legislation for the registration and protection of works, pirates are advanced, equipped with equipment, “so we have to create means to stop the growth of this evil, in which they invest money, it is necessary to dismantle these investments” .

BUT: Piracy of pay-TV services continues to grow

The Director of Regulatory and Legal at MultiChoice Angola, Nair Pitra, who was also present at the event whose themes were “The National System of Intellectual Property”, “The Use and Benefit of the System of Intellectual Property” and “Bodies Intervening in the National System of Intellectual Property”, complained the fact that the institution pays, annually, taxes, more than 3 percent of its income, considering an extremely high figure.

Despite the existence of laws, funds and public institutions, “we do not see concrete actions by the State to stop this evil, we only praise SENADIAC, which gives its face".

He warned public institutions that no foreign investor will invest in the country if there are not more solid actions against piracy. Community televisions constitute, in his opinion, a risk “very large” for not knowing the contents, the editorial line, “this is a matter of state security“, which cannot be taken lightly.
