Instagram explains how its content recommendation system works

Instagram leader Adam Mosseri shared a blog post where he explains how the social network's recommendation system works, noting that the different areas of the platform are governed by algorithms that do not work in the same way.

"Instagram doesn't have a single algorithm that governs what people see and don't see on the app", noted Mosseri, explaining that the platform has multiple algorithms and 'ranking' systems in different areas of the social network – such as Explore, Reels, Stories and also the search engine.

BUT: Instagram releases the addition of up to 5 links in the profile bio

In the case of the 'feed', the Instagram displays certain posts first based on activity history, as well as past interactions with others. Likewise, the first Stories to appear for the user are related to viewing history and also “proximity”.

On the other hand, the publications present in the Explore area (from people with whom you have not interacted) are displayed according to “posts you have 'liked', recorded, shared or commented on in the past”.

More than explaining how Instagram recommends publications, this publication by Mosseri highlights how platforms owned by Meta are increasingly functioning as ways to present new content – moving away from publications by family, friends and other well-known people.
